Native oak log inoculated with Shiitake mycelium – A living ecosystem inside a log

This production log was inoculated approximately one year ago with Shiitake mycelium. During this time, the mycelium has slowly colonized the wood until reaching the maturity required to fruit.

The inoculation holes were sealed with natural wax, protecting the mycelium during incubation. The result is a living system capable of producing mushrooms for several years.

How the Shiitake log works: natural fruiting cycle – Sustainable and natural production

The process imitates the natural cycle in the forest – each cycle includes:

  • Immersion ( immersion in water simulates heavy rainfall, triggering mushroom formation.)
  • Production (Fructification)
  • Harvest
  • Rest period (approx. 2 months)

With proper care, the log can produce 3–4 flushes per year, increasing production during the second and third year.

What is included with the Shiitake log?

  • Shiitake production log
  • Usage instructions
  • Optional personalized dedication (please indicate as a comment when placing your order)

Step 1 – Immersion

  • Remove the log from the box as soon as possible (it can stay a few days, but no more than one week).
  • Submerge completely in water for 24 hours (maximum 48h).
  • Preferably use non-chlorinated water. If using tap water, let it sit for 12 hours beforehand.

Step 2 – Production

  • Remove the log from the water and place it upright on a plate with about 2 cm of water.
  • Cover it with the included plastic bag for 3 days to maintain humidity.
  • After 3 days, remove the bag.
  • Keep in a cool, shaded place with indirect natural light and good ventilation.

Step 3 – Harvest

  • In summer, mushrooms may appear in 3–4 days; in autumn up to 2 weeks.
  • Harvest when caps are open but still slightly convex.
  • Cut stems flush with the log.
  • No need to wash before cooking.

Step 4 – Rest

  • After harvesting, allow the log to rest for about 2 months.
  • Keep in a cool, shaded place.
  • Indoors: upright on a plate with 2 cm of water (avoid radiators and direct sun).
  • Outdoors: laid horizontally in a shaded vegetated area, without direct sun exposure.
  • Water occasionally if the wood begins to crack, especially in dry climates.

New cycle

After 2–2.5 months, submerge the log again to trigger a new flush.

During 3–4 winter months activation is not necessary; this rest period supports stronger spring flushes.

Important: The log contains a living organism. If the first immersion does not produce mushrooms, it may still be completing incubation. Let it rest and repeat immersion after one month.
